California Youth Democracy Alliance

Background

California Youth Democracy Alliance (CYDA) is working to invigorate America's Youth to become more active within our political system. Public schools have reduced instruction in cultural awareness, civics and history, in response to the demand for higher language and math test scores.

A healthy society includes people who feel socially connected, who feel that their contributions matter.   Becoming part of a healthy society is essential for youth to succeed in both school and the workforce.   We are attempting to close the Participation Gap. CYDA hopes to develop emerging leaders to fight for knowledge and opportunities that prepare youth for full participation in school, the workplace and civil society.   The challenge is to invite and engage students in creative opportunities to address issues that they care about.

While many students volunteer for community service, there are few opportunities for students to participate in developing and implementing solutions to problems in their community and beyond.   We need to invigorate our experiment in democracy, as we educate and engage the younger generation as active responsible citizens.   Our responsibility to guide youth to be culturally competent leaders, to participate responsibly in civil society and to be successful in school is critical to the well-being of our communities, our nation and our world.
